SPFFPA History
1944
Four locals met in Regina, Saskatchewan on March 30th, 1944 and founded the SFFA (Saskatchewan Fire Fighters Association):
IAFF Local 80 - Saskatoon
IAFF Local 181 - Regina
IAFF Local 510 - Prince Albert
IAFF Local 553 - Moose Jaw
The four locals had a total of 170 members.
Later that year they met in Saskatoon on August 2nd and 3rd, electing their first Executive:
President J. Ritchie (Local 80)
Vice-President R. Μumford (Local 80)
Secretary-Treasurer E. Harris (Local 553)
Per Capita was set at 32.5 cents per member per month (170 members)
Today's Per Capita is currently $8.02 per member per month plus EDF $7.00, Political Action $1.00, and IAFF Education $0.50 for a total of $16.52 per member per month (941 members).
1945
Saskatchewan became the first Provincial Professional Fire Fighters Association in Canada to affiliate with the IAFF. We also received the IAFF Charter C-0001.
1959
There had only been the original four cities in the SFFA until IAFF Local 1318 Swift Current joined in 1959.
1965
IAFF Local 1527 Yorkton joins the SFFA.
1968
IAFF Local 1756 North Battleford joins the SFFA.
1970
The SFFA changed its name to SPFFA (Saskatchewan Professional Fire Fighters Association)
1975
The SPFFA Burn Fund was established, becoming the first Provincial Burn Fund in Canada.
1986
IAFF Local 2989 Weyburn was the latest city to join the SPFFA, bringing the total number of cities affiliated to 8.
1991
The SPFFA attended the first IAFF Legislative Lobby in Ottawa, Ontario.
1993
The SPFFA established the Political Action Fund at $0.50 per member per month. It was increased to $1.00 in 2005 where it remains today.
1994
The SPFFA held the first Saskatchewan Provincial Legislative Lobby.
1996
OH&S Infectious Disease Control Protocol is enacted.
1997
OH&S Act on Fire Fighter Regulations 2 in 2 out.
2001
WCB Cancer Submissions were made on an important day in history: September 11, 2001.
2003
Bill 18: Fire Fighter Cancer Legislation was introduced (Bladder, Brain, Kidney, Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and Leukemia).
2005
Bill 102: Right to Know, Mandatory Testing, and Bill 25 for more Fire Fighter Cancer Legislation (Colorectal, Ureter, Lung, and Testicular) and also Heart Injuries.
2007
Saskatchewan became the first Canadian province to have 100% of their Local Affiliates membership contribute to the IAFF Fire Pac.
2010
Emeritus Status Resolution for SPFFA Executive members passed at the 67th Annual Convention in Yorkton.

2015 - Gerry Huget, IAFF Local 181, Regina.
2020 - Brian Belitsky, IAFF Local 1527, Yorkton.
2011
Bill 174: Esophageal Cancer Legislation.
2012
the Sask Party started a Labour Review leading to numerous problems. Population threshold raised to 20 000 from 10 000, preventing 4 of our Locals the right to binding arbitration.
2016
Bill 39: Psychological Injury PTSD.
2017
IAFF 3270 Saskatoon Paramedics join in January.
IAFF 5094 ECC, Provincial Dispatchers join in November.
2018
December: Fall Meetings unanimous vote on name change from SPFFA to SPFFPA to include our Paramedics (Saskatchewan Professional Fire Fighters and Paramedics Association).
Emeritus President Gerry Huget passed away on September 15.
We named our Annual Provincial Lobby the Gerry Huget Government Lobby at the Fall Meetings.
